Susan Coffin MD, MPH

Faculty Member

Susan Coffin is a faculty member at PolicyLab and the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Epidemiology and Antimicrobial Stewardship (IDEAS) research group at Clinical Futures, as well as a professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Additionally, Dr. Coffin is the associate hospital epidemiologist after she served as CHOP’s hospital epidemiologist and medical director of the Department of Infection Prevention and Control for over 10 years. She has served as a medical consultant in the Division of Disease Control at the Philadelphia Department of Public Health where she supported the health care epidemiology program and the COVID-19 response for the City of Philadelphia. 

Dr. Coffin has provided critical guidance on PolicyLab’s COVID-19-focused body of work, contributing her infectious disease expertise to several of PolicyLab’s virtual conversations and has co-written PolicyLab’s guidance on school reopening efforts. She has also co-authored several FAQ documents tackling questions from providers and caregivers on pressing health-related issues related to returning to child care and supports for youth with special educational needs.

Dr. Coffin has an active and well-funded research program that focuses on the prevention of health care-associated infections and vaccine-preventable diseases. She is an active participant in numerous local, state and nationwide public health programs that address such topics as the epidemiology and prevention of health care associated infections, pandemic influenza preparedness and pediatric influenza. She is board certified in Pediatrics and Infectious Diseases and holds a Master of Public Health from the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health. In addition, Dr. Coffin has worked on infectious diseases prevention projects in health care and community settings in Botswana, Ghana, Vietnam, Egypt, Greece and China.
