Parents with low health literacy face difficulty with early intervention referrals

In a recent study published in the Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved, PolicyLab’s Alex Fiks, Marsha Gerdes, and Manuel Jimenez found that parents with low health literacy commonly reported difficulty with early intervention referrals, including contact problems and confusion about the referral process when their young children were identified with developmental problems.  Their findings suggest that strategies to accommodate parents with low health literacy level may improve early intervention referral success.
