PolicyLab responded to a request for comment from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to Rescind 2022 Public Charge Ground of Inadmissibility Regulations.

In their response, contributing PolicyLab experts cautioned that rescinding these regulations and enabling broad interpretation of public charge will result in decreased participation in numerous social programs which are critical to the country's public health. Additionally, these changes will impact immigrant families and the health and well-being of immigrant children, both those who are citizens and those who are not. They conclude with recommendations for improving the definition of "public charge" to mitigate harm.
