Senate HELP Committee Request for Information: Preparing for the Next Pandemic

In a letter, PolicyLab responded to an opportunity for feedback from the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions on their white paper "Preparing for the Next Pandemic."
 
PolicyLab offers the following input on what can be learned from the response to the current COVID-19 pandemic and recommendations for how we can be prepared to respond to a future pandemic. The recommendations that follow are organized around the framework of the white paper as well as the guiding questions that were shared by the Committee where relevant. 
 
PolicyLab cited extensive research on the following:
 
  1. Accelerating research and development of tests, treatments and vaccines
  2. Expanding the ability to detect, identify, model and track emerging infectious diseases
  3. Improving state and local public health capacities to respond to crises
