PolicyLab has many talented alumni whose experiences here led them to pursue exciting opportunities to continue the center's mission beyond our walls.
Today, Dolapo Fakeye, PhD, MA, is a principal policy analyst for the Hilltop Institute at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where he evaluates health services payment and delivery initiatives within the state of Maryland and provides policy expertise to state health agency leaders. At PolicyLab, Dr. Fakeye worked across teams on several initiatives, which he says contributed to his approach to his work today. As a clinical research coordinator, he focused on two issues—how level of provider workload affected the quality and safety of inpatient care and the drivers of child maltreatment and probability of a diagnosis of abuse for common childhood fractures.
Dr. Fakeye credits PolicyLab’s process of exploring social determinants of health as a significant influence on his approach to viewing health problems in a holistic way. He explains that the ability to disentangle different factors that lead to health outcomes is a useful skill he employs now in his work with Maryland’s Medicaid program. His time at PolicyLab provided him with the experience of working with a melting pot of new and experienced researchers and an enthusiasm for looking beneath the surface to solve problems.
Providing opportunities to high school, undergraduate, graduate and medical students is a great way to familiarize scholars with the world of public health research, health policy and communications. At PolicyLab, our internship program and research awareness outreach efforts provide learning opportunities to our local communities, schools and universities. Our reach spans Philadelphia and beyond to ensure all students from diverse populations have opportunities to receive an immersive experience in the world of research that they can take with them in their future endeavors.
